Diversification using Mary Mason
Hello all! One of the most exciting characters that I have seen in film (American Mary) is Mary Mason. Played by Katherine Isabelle, Mary is a victim of sexual assault – coping with the obvious trauma one can receive from such an encounter – while vulnerable, she resorts to a more macabre specialization within her field of study: extreme body modifications. This leads to an epic of unusual and sometimes gruesome experimental surgeries that Mary performs on USUALLY willing individuals – which gives her the chance to meet some real characters with unforgiving stories.
What I appreciate is the revenge she gets on her assaulter and the confidence she gains when she is taking back her life and gaining success within the extreme body mod community. It’s the perfect revenge story in my opinion and extremely well done as far as character development goes. Showing a female student being taken advantage of by a professor who seemingly has the upper hand – and watching the tables turn immediately after is always a nice feeling.
Plus, the film lets Mary’s development open doors to the indescribably fascinating side characters along the way. In a sense, Mary found herself a new more accepting community of people and became happy when overcoming the trauma she endured from past relations. For this to be a pretty chilling and toe-curlingly gruesome horror film – it shows the importance of rising from the ashes of fate and determining your own future surrounded by people who care about you and consider you a very important part of their lives.
