Final Post

Hello once again everyone, this will be my final blog post for now. And what is a final post without some reflection about what ha s been accomplished thus far? Throughout the weeks that I have been posting to this blog site, I have accomplished several things: expanding my views, expressing my views, and addressing counterarguments of my subjective opinions on a film that fits my topic of choice. One of my favorite ones to write was the one about the banned video game Rule of Rose, I enjoyed doing the res earch about what exactly was so controversial about it in the first place that caused such an uproar.     A challenging post to write was my post about an influential person who relates to my blog topic. I chose Mia Goth, and while I did not know a lot about her, the most difficult aspect of that post was putting her life story into my own words. I am not too great at writing informational posts, so having to write against my weakness was a struggle.     In...

Making Sense of the News

Hello and welcome back to Night Minded. Today I will be covering some exciting news for the psychological horror (game) fans!  There  is a plethora of new games coming o ut that fit within the genre. Some ind ependent (indie) games, and some made by bigger well-known companies.  With an influx in dinosaur fans because of the recent Jurassic (World? Park?) movies, there are multiple dinosaur related games being released .  Deathground  is a realistic game where you are living  in a present-day world  of dinosaurs, and you are forced to kill them before they can hunt you down. Thankfully, there is  an option  to build a team to fight  against them – but either way  it is   a challenging task  especially with the unpredictable AI controlling the creatures.   Ill  is another upcoming game in which you play as an investigator who is trying to control the disease (?) of sorts that is spreading and turning innocent civi...

Profile Feature

For this blog’s profile feature I chose a recent horror icon who – because of her amazing acting skills – has gained the respect of many horror enthusiasts. Mia Gypsy Mello da Silva Goth, better known as Mia Goth has recently been in two big movies within the psychological horror genre. Pearl and X being two of the more well-known titles that she has starred in as of late. Born on October 25th, 1993, a young Mia Goth knew already that her passion was being on the screen. Goth starred in multiple school plays before her attendance at the 2007 “Underage Festival” that changed her life forever, she was signed to model and was featured in magazines for big name brands such as Miu Miu and Vogue. At only age 16 she was already in her first film “Nymphomaniac” directed by Lars Von Trier. It was at this point in her life she began developing her own sense of style and preferences for the films she played in; focusing on films within the realm of horror. Goth’s next bigger hit was Future...

Diversification using Mary Mason

Hello all! One of the most exciting characters that I have seen in film ( American Mary ) is Mary Mason. Played by Katherine Isabelle, Mary is a victim of sexual assault – coping with the obvious trauma one can receive from such an encounter – while vulnerable, she resorts to a more macabre specialization within her field of study: extreme body modifications. This leads to an epic of unusual and sometimes gruesome experimental surgeries that Mary performs on USUALLY willing individuals – which gives her the chance to meet some real characters with unforgiving stories.  What I appreciate is the revenge she gets on her assaulter and the confidence she gains when she is taking back her life and gaining success within the extreme body mod community. It’s the perfect revenge story in my opinion and extremely well done as far as character development goes. Showing a female student being taken advantage of by a professor who seemingly has the upper hand – and watching the tables tu...

Like-minded.

Hello again to those returning, and to the first timers! The blog I am centering my post around today is called The Story Arc. From what I have seen while exploring the website, this blog is sorted into articles written by the multiple owners of the blog. Victiny and Luke will be my focus for this post with their page on Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared, this article ties in both a summary of the characters and an analysis of them as well– along with how their arc caters to the true nature of the story being told.  Included with the text are images of the characters being talked about, this provides readers who aren’t familiar with the series and its characters a glimpse into the colorfully fabricated world of the show. The strengths that come along with this blog are the different perspectives coming from the shared interest of DHMIS from the two authors. Reading each individual’s interpretation of the same topic is extremely valuable in itself, getting multiple perspectives on the ...

The Controversy of Coraline

Coraline made in 2009 is a film by Laika Studios, in this movie a young girl going through the change of a big move discovers a hidden world where an alternate dimension exists that mimics her own life but eerily perfect. Many parents see the content of this movie as too disturbing for kids to consume, which led to various controversies I will cover today.  The film carries us from a dreary, rainy world that young Coraline lives in– to a wondrous colorful ‘other world’ with alternate yet identical parents who claim to have the permanent ability to provide Coraline with the life she desires. But nothing that good comes without a price, does it? No. Unfortunately for Coraline, what her other parents want is to sew buttons into her eyes in return for her to live a life with them. Some of the biggest worry for parents is the scenes of either in-your-face violence such as a scene where Coraline throws a cat onto the ‘other mother’s’ face only for the cat to then rip out her butt...

Investigative Blog

Why is Mother ! Considered a bad/controversial film? Darren Aronofsky's Mother ! Is a movie made to keep the audience both entertained and uneasy. The film is a tango between what is right and wrong in the marriage between unnamed characters (which represent God, Earth, and mankind). Mother ! follows some of the same tropes as used in another infamous film Rosemary’s Baby which is where some of the hatred towards the film that supposedly “poured out of” Aronofsky comes from (James). The movie is lengthy and tries to accomplish a portrayal of the blurry line between reality and delusion; something that 2010’s Black Swan did exceptionally well in. But instead of accomplishing that goal, Aronofsky leads the movie down a long dreary path of unsettling emotion. Viewers complain that there is no real direction, “It’s enough to say that the episode . . . is full of action and is essentially meaningless” (James). Most of the movie seems to be described as lacking, and is caught up in a lo...
